Matchday 4: Top duo travels eastward, high hurdle for THW

The fourth matchday of the DAIKIN Handball-Bundesliga starts already on Wednesday with the game between TVB Stuttgart and VfL Gummersbach. One day later, the two European League participants THW Kiel and MT Melsungen will lock horns. While champions SC Magdeburg are taking part in the IHF Club World Championship in Egypt from Friday on, the only two teams with a clean slate will play away in the East: Rhein-Neckar Löwen travel to Leipzig, SG Flensburg-Handewitt to Eisenach.

Wednesday, 25 September:

TVB Stuttgart vs. VfL Gummersbach (19:00 CEST live on Dyn and worldwide on HBL.TV)

  • With 2:4 points each, the TVB and VfL are tied in the table after three matches.
  • After two defeats at the start, TVB Stuttgart managed a 26:25 victory in Erlangen, after trailing 18:22, thanks to the last goal from new signing Lenny Rubin.
  • The 29:34 in Leipzig last weekend was the second defeat in a row for the ambitious Gummersbach team.
  • In the coming weeks, VfL will have to do without its top performers Julian Köster and Teitur Örn Einarsson due to injuries.
  • In the 2023/24 season, Gummersbach won both duels against Stuttgart, the overall record is 7:4 wins for VfL.

Thursday, 26 September:

SC DHfK Leipzig vs. Rhein-Neckar Löwen (19:00 CEST live on Dyn and worldwide on HBL.TV)

  • The fifth-placed team hosts the second-placed side: Rhein-Neckar Löwen are still unbeaten with 6:0 points after their successes over Kiel, Bietigheim and Melsungen. Leipzig played a very strong game in the 34:29 against Gummersbach and celebrated their second victory.
  • Löwen newcomer Ivan Martinovic scored 28 goals in three games, making him – together with Kiel's Emil Madsen and Füchse wing Tim Freihöfer – the second-best scorer in the HBL.
  • With 49 saves – 15 of them against Melsungen – and a save rate of over 39 percent, Löwengoalkeeper David Späth is currently the best goalkeeper in the league.
  • Leipzig’s goalkeeper Kristian Saeveraas has also been playing very well recently, fending off 14 shots against Gummersbach.
  • In the last two seasons, both teams have won their home games; after a total of 18 duels, the Löwen have twelve wins to their name, Leipzig four.

THW Kiel vs. MT Melsungen (19:00 CEST live on Dyn and worldwide on HBL.TV)

  • Both teams are in the chasing pack with 4:2 points after three match days.
  • After the opening defeat at the Rhein-Neckar Löwen, THW Kiel showed that they had recovered well, winning comfortably 29:24 at champions and cup winners SC Magdeburg on the third match day.
  • After four wins in a row in the HBL and the European League qualification, MT Melsungenrecently suffered their first defeat of the season with a 26:31 loss at the Rhein-Neckar Löwen.
  • New signing Andreas Wolff was Kiel's hero in the win in Magdeburg with 14 saves, and with a total of 40 saves he is in second place in the overall statistics.
  • MT achieved a draw at home and their first ever away win in Kiel with a 35:30 win last season, but overall THW have won 31 of the 37 games against Melsungen so far.

Friday, 27 September:

FRISCH AUF! Göppingen vs. TSV Hannover-Burgdorf (19:00 CEST live on Dyn and worldwide on HBL.TV)

  • FRISCH AUF! Göppingen took one point from three games, most recently Benjamin Matschke's team lost 32:37 to league leaders SG Flensburg-Handewitt.
  • The “Recken” from Hanover, on the other hand, caused the surprise of the last round with a 38:35 win against runner-up Füchse Berlin, and have 4:2 points on their account; in the last two games, TSV was on a goal-scoring spree, netting a total of 74 goals.
  • In the victory over the Füchse, German international Renars Uscins scored eleven goals, making him the second-best scorer on the third matchday (23 goals in total) - and scored once more than Göppingen's Ludvig Hallbäck against Flensburg.
  • The overall record of both teams is absolutely even with 14 wins each, Hannover won two of the last three duels, but FRISCH AUF! has won ten of the 15 home matches.

ThSV Eisenach vs. SG Flensburg-Handewitt (20:00 CEST live on Dyn and worldwide on HBLTV)

  • ThSV Eisenach are already playing their third home game of the season - the first two appearances against Berlin (35:41) and Bietigheim (32:35) ended in defeats, however, with Mischa Kaufmann's team scoring the only points in the 28:24 win in Erlangen.
  • Three games, three wins and 188 goals already scored - SG Flensburg-Handewitt lead the HBL table without losing a point after three match days - and has scored at least 37 goals in every game so far.
  • With 14 goals in Bietigheim, Eisenach’s German international Marko Grgic was the most successful scorer of the third match day. In total, Grgic has scored 24 goals this season.
  • Flensburg’s wing Emil Jakobsen has scored ten of his 27 goals so far in the 37:32 victory against Göppingen – the Dane is now fifth in the HBL’s overall statistics.
  • The 28:27 in the previous season was Eisenach’s first success ever against Flensburg after 18 defeats and one draw.

Saturday, 28 September:

Handball Sport Verein Hamburg vs. TBV Lemgo Lippe (19:00 CEST live on Dyn and worldwide on HBL.TV)

  • After the 28:25 against HSG Wetzlar, TBV Lemgo are in tenth place with 4:2 points, exactly one point and one rank ahead of Handball Sport Verein Hamburg.
  • Hamburg had to wait until the end for their first win of the season in the 31:30 at newly promoted side VfL Potsdam on the third match day, despite leading by five goals at one point.
  • TBV newcomer Constantin Möstl has saved 37 shots in three games, which corresponds to a rate of over 36 percent, making him the third best goalkeeper in the HBL overall statistics.
  • Three of the last ten games between Hamburg and Lemgo ended in draws, including the last duel in Lemgo, the first leg was won by HSVH, which also have the edge overall with 17:9 wins.

Sunday, 29 September:

SG BBM Bietigheim vs. VfL Gummersbach (15:00 CEST live on Dyn and worldwide on HBL.TV)

  • Newcomer SG BBM Bietigheim is one of the surprises at the start of the season with 4:2 points - both wins came away, in Potsdam (28:26) and in Eisenach (35:32) - against Gummersbach, Iker Romero's team hopes to get their first home points.
  • With 14 saves, Fredrik Genz was one of Bietigheim's match winners in the win against Eisenach.
  • Both teams have only met four times, Bietigheim got 3:1 points at home, but lost both games in Gummersbach.

Füchse Berlin vs. HC Erlangen (16:30 CEST live on Dyn and worldwide on HBL.TV)

  • After the success in the Super Cup and the opening league victories in Eisenach and against Leipzig, Füchse recently suffered their first defeat of the season with a 35:38 in Hanover.
  • HC Erlangen is one of three teams that are still at the bottom of the table without a point after three games, and against Stuttgart they recently gave away their first win of the season in the final phase with a 25:26 defeat.
  • With an incredible rate of 90.63 percent - 29 goals in 32 attempts - Füchse world handball player Mathias Gidsel leads the HBL's goal scorers list.
  • Füchse have won all of their last seven games against Erlangen, the last HCE win dates back to 2021, and overall HCE have only won two of 18 games against Berlin.

TVB Stuttgart vs. HSG Wetzlar (16:30 CEST live on Dyn and worldwide on HBL.TV)

  • Like Erlangen and newly promoted VfL Potsdam, HSG Wetzlar are still waiting for theirfirst points of the season - most recently they suffered a 25:28 defeat in Lemgo.
  • Wetzlar's best scorer is currently Philipp Ahouansou with 17 goals.
  • With a home win and a draw in Wetzlar, TVB took three points against HSG in the 2023/24 season, although the HSG has 12:3 wins in the overall statistics.
